The generic name for Tylenol is acetaminophen. It belongs to the drug groups fever reducers (antipyretics) and pain relievers (analgesics). Tylenol is available in varying tablet forms, liquid form and suppositories. It also comes in adult, children and infant formulas. Store Tylenol at room temperature and the suppositories in the refrigerator. Keep away from heat and light. Keep away form children and pets.
Tylenol usesTylenol is used to control mild to moderate pain associated with the common cold, headaches, tooth aches, muscle aches, back aches, minor arthritis pain and menstrual cramp as well as reduce fever. It relieves pain by causing an increase in one's pain tolerance and therefore allowing more pain before the person is able to feel it. It reduces fever by helping the body eliminate its excess heat. Tylenol should be given according to packaging directions or per instructions from your doctor. It can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it close to the time for your next dose, wait and take the medication at the time of your next dose. Do not take two doses of Tylenol at once. Tylenol should not be taken for more than 3 consecutive days for fever or for more than 10 consecutive days for pain. If symptoms continue, consult a doctor to find out if you should continue its use. Do not use for more than 2 days in children and do not use in children under the age of 3 unless your doctor instructed you to do so.. Tylenol works best if it is taken at the first sign of pain. Unlike other types of pain relievers, Tylenol does not cause stomach and intestine ulcers.
Precautions for using TylenolConsult your doctor before taking Tylenol if you have liver disease, kidney problems, hepatitis, phenylketonuria (PKU) or use alcohol, especially if you consume three or more drinks per day. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding talk with your doctor before taking. Tylenol does pass through breastmilk. Do not take Tylenol with other pain medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin or other prescription pain relievers. Tylenol should not be taken along with alcohol as it can seriously damage the liver.
Tylenol interactionsInform your doctor or pharmacist before taking Tylenol if you are currently taking any of the following: anti-seizure medications, blood thinners, isoniazid or phenothiazines. Tylenol may interfere with certain medical and lab test, be sure to tell medical staff that you are taking it. Do not take Tylenol along with other medications containing acetaminophen.
Tylenol side effectsTylenol can cause the following side effects: easy bruising and/or bleeding and new signs of infection such as sore throat or fever. A rash, swelling, dizziness, itchiness and trouble breathing can be a sign of an allergic reation. Contact your doctor immediately if these signs occur.
Tylenol overdoseIf you suspect an overdose contact poison control at 1-800-222-1222. Signs of an overdose include nausea, vomiting, sweating, yellow eyes and/or skin, dark urine, severe stomach or abdominal pain, loss of appetite, confusion, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat and extreme tiredness.
