Claritin, also known as Loratadine, is a medication that is used to alleviate the symptoms of allergies, such as congestion, sneezing, and itchy and watery eyes. It also treats skin allergies, such as hives. It is available either over the counter or from the pharmacy.
Claritin is classified as a medication called a non-sedating antihistamine. This means that it acts against substances called histamine that your body releases during allergy attacks. Reducing histamine results in better symptom control of various allergic conditions. However, unlike many other antihistamines, Claritin does not tend to make people drowsy, sleepy, or dizzy, which is why it is classified as non-sedating.
Claritin is available in a wide range of formulations. You can choose Claritin in pills, capsules, or syrups in varying strengths. The higher strength formulations are usually only available from the pharmacy, because you should be cared for by a doctor in order to take them. Lower strength formulations are safe to take over the counter without being under the care of a doctor, although of course you should always check with your physician. Claritin syrups are generally a lower dosage formulation intended for children, but adults who have difficulty swallowing pills can also take Claritin syrup.
You may also choose Claritin combined with other medications, such as a decongestant ("Claritin D"). Keep in mind the fact that decongestants can have additional side-effects, including dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty sleeping. Some people find, in consultation with their physician, that Claritin D can be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of the common cold and can be substituted for other, more sedating medication preparations containing an antihistamine and a decongestant.
Claritin has a low risk of side effects, but like with any medication, some people may experience them. Generally, side effects will be mild and limited to slight drowsiness, headache, or dry mouth. A small number of people experience gastrointestinal issues due to taking Claritin. If you notice any side effects that are severe, distressing, or not listed as common side effects, you should discontinue taking Claritin and speak with your doctor.
Always talk to your doctor before beginning any medication. Your doctor may not want you to start Claritin if you have certain chronic or severe health conditions or if he or she believes another medication might be a better fit. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this medication might not be safe, so talk to your obstetrician.
Always make sure that you read the instructions on the box or bottle of Claritin very carefully, as you would any other type of medication. It is important to give the correct dose at the correct time intervals, otherwise there may be risk of overdose or increased side-effects. Many types of Claritin are designed to work all day, but check the box or bottle. If you accidentally take too much Claritin, speak to a doctor or pharmacist or call poison control.
